Well, friends, it’s that time of year again. That’s right, the time of year where I tell you I’m doing something crazy like writing a novel and I’m hitting you up for support. My goal this year is a mere $50, but think of the things $50 can do for a kid who wants to write, and has nowhere else to turn. Writing is an important step in not just literacy, but in self-discovery. Plus, think of the morale you’re offering! You only need to donate $50, but I’ve gotta come up with 50,000 words that actually mean something.
So what exactly am I raising money for? The name of the organisation is The Office of Letters and Light, and their mission statement reads as follows:
We believe in ambitious acts of the imagination.
The Office of Letters and Light organizes events where children and adults find the inspiration, encouragement, and structure they need to achieve their creative potential. Our programs are web-enabled challenges with vibrant real-world components, designed to foster self-expression while building community on local and global levels.
They’re the amazing (or sick, depending on how you look at it) minds behind NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, which challenges anyone who wants to take part to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. In short, they make you get the ideas out. If you’ve ever tried to write anything, you know what a godsend a challenge like this can be. They also run the Young Writers’ Program, which encourages kids from grades K-12 to get excited about writing.
I understand that times are tough but if there’s only one time of the year that you listen to my pleas, let it be November. And if you’re unable to help by donating, have no fear. Just kindly RT my page, or share it, or reblog it, or whatever else there is on the internet. Tell your friends. You never know where the next great novel is going to come from. It might even come from me.
